Logging a meal
This is the biggest difference. In MyFitnessPal you usually search for each food, pick an entry and set the amount. For a homemade dinner with five ingredients, that is five searches. In Calori you take one photo; the AI picks out each item, estimates the portion and logs the calories and macros, which you can adjust before saving. MyFitnessPal now offers photo logging too, through Meal Scan on its Premium tier.
Where MyFitnessPal is better
- Database size. MyFitnessPal has one of the largest food databases of any app, including a lot of UK products and restaurant meals. Because much of it is added by users, check that the entry you pick looks right.
- A free version. You can log food and count calories without paying, if you are happy with adverts and searching by hand.
- Web access. You can log from a computer as well as your phone.
Where Calori is better
- Speed. A photo is quicker than searching, which is the main reason people stop tracking.
- Barcode and photo logging included. Both are part of Calori rather than a paid upgrade.
- Tracking with friends. Calori has a feed where you follow friends, see their meals and comment, which helps a lot of people stay consistent.
- Rings on your wrist and Home Screen. Calories, protein, carbs and fat show as rings on Apple Watch and in widgets.
Which should you choose?
Choose MyFitnessPal if you want a free app, log on a computer, or eat a lot of packaged food that you would rather search for by name. Choose Calori if you have tried tracking before and given up because it took too long, or if you want friends to keep you on track.
