Snacking is fine when you are losing weight, as long as the snacks fit your calorie target. The ones that work best have protein or fibre, because they keep you full until your next meal. Crisps, biscuits and chocolate bars are easy to eat but do not fill you up for long.

Calories and protein are typical values. Brands and portion sizes vary, so check the label for exact figures.

The most filling low calorie snacks

If you want a snack that stops hunger, pick one with at least 10 g of protein. Skyr, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, eggs, jerky, prawns, cooked chicken, tuna and edamame all do this for under 150 kcal. Fruit and popcorn are the best low-protein options, because their fibre and volume fill you up for very few calories.

Low calorie sweet snacks

  • Berries with 0% Greek yoghurt
  • Two squares of dark chocolate
  • A light hot chocolate
  • Frozen grapes or a satsuma
  • Low calorie ice cream tubs, many of which are 70 to 100 kcal per 100 ml

Snacks that look healthy but are high in calories

  • Granola and cereal bars: often 150 to 250 kcal with little protein.
  • Nuts by the handful: a generous handful can be 50 g and 300 kcal.
  • Dried fruit: a small box of raisins is about 100 kcal; a big handful is more.
  • Smoothies: a 250 ml bottle can be 120 to 160 kcal of mostly sugar.

Fitting snacks into your day

Plan one or two snacks into your calorie target rather than adding them on top. If your target is 1,600 kcal, two 150 kcal snacks leave 1,300 for meals. Work out your target with our calorie calculator, and see high protein meals for meals that keep you full.

Snacks are also the food people most often forget to log. In Calori you can snap a photo or scan the barcode in a few seconds, so they get counted.

What is a good low calorie snack that fills you up?
Snacks with protein or fibre keep you full longest. Skyr, Greek yoghurt, boiled eggs, cottage cheese, edamame, jerky, apples and popcorn are all good choices for under 150 kcal.
